THE RAT

Rats need partners more than any other signs and are looking for soulmates who can share work commitments or weekend pursuits, making life a two-way street every day of the year. If you are with a rat, be prepared – they don’t date, mate and relate the way other signs do. They are looking for a deep bond that can last a lifetime and have enormous issues, should a partnership ever fall apart.

If you are a rat then you may have fallen in love with a soulmate when you were very young. If so this person’s influence will never entirely leave you. It is interesting to note that three rats – Prince Charles, Bono and Alan Turing – formed youthful attachments which lasted. Charles eventually married his sweetheart Camilla, Bono is still married to his early love and Alan Turing (who tragically lost his boyhood love) remained influenced by him, all his life.

Every rat needs a partnership of some kind, which has a spiritual dimension. It may be the relationship between an artist and a muse. It may be an Ernie and Bert style partnership (were they the original gay Muppets?) For the record, Muppets creator Jim Henson was a rat.

It is too simplistic to say that rats are romantics and just want a forever marriage. What they are actually seeking is any kind of partnership, no matter how hard, no matter how complicated, that will teach them what they need to learn on a soul level. It goes beyond falling in love, sexual compatibility, wedding cake and a white picket fence. Rat relationships are frequently intense and complex, and the relationship with the ex can continue long after the line has been drawn. Why? Because it serves the same purpose it did at the start; it’s a life lesson.

For every Bogie there has to be a Bacall and perhaps it’s no surprise that Lauren Bacall was a rat. (And yes, Bogie really did say ‘You dirty rat’ in his films). This Chinese sign vibrates strongly to Libra in Western astrology and it is all about the way the scales are balanced between two people.

Equality, fairness and justice fascinate the rat – and if they do not then life will eventually catch up with this sign and teach her a lesson she will not forget. It is part of the rat’s life path to examine what is fair, in terms of balancing the scales, and her partners are her raw material. At heart, the rat seeks to be one half of a power couple. It is a rat’s greatest moment when she achieves it.

Behind every Chris Martin there is a Gwyneth Paltrow – a rat. In the year 1984, a rat year, George Orwell’s publishers Penguin relaunched his book 1984, which is the story of two lovers who try to beat the system together. If you are a rat, you can never read it too many times.

ABOUT CHINASCOPES

After I began writing horoscopes in Asia – with Elle in South Korea, Vogue in Japan and Cleo in Singapore – I began researching Chinese astrology too. Some years after the Chinese translation of my first book, Astrology for Women (Apple Tuttle) I decided to launch Chinascopes – a new way of looking at your Chinese sign, blending East-West astrology.
