Welcome to September!
The month is dominated by Virgo, an earth sign, and so this is the month to try and ground yourself with better health. This covers food, drink and doctors as well as fitness.
The two other earth signs, Capricorn and Taurus, will find it easier to bring people down to earth with them in September. Mercury Retrograde ends on September 30th, 2023, so any attempt at grounding yourself will pan out eventually.
Make a new start on the New Moon in Virgo on Friday, September 15th, 2023, which is ideal for a new weight-loss program or new work project.

Lifestyle, Workload, Health, Wellbeing
You will retrace your steps with the most important work, unpaid work or academic issues of the year, in September. This is because Mercury Retrograde will go over the same steps he took in August so the story may change or even come to nothing. This should not stop you from pursuing what matters, Aries. Yet, it is important to have a back-up plan. Get everything in writing and make sure you have (say) a second copy of what is most important to your job or university/college commitments. It’s the same with work you are not paid for too, housework, for example.
Your health (mental health and physical health) is also in the frame now. What you believed was final in August is not the case, and that may be an appointment date which alters, or a first opinion given to you; a second opinion may now be called for. All this back-pedaling with Mercury is quite normal. It’s neither negative nor positive, it just is what it is. Nothing should stop you from putting wheels in motion, Aries, but just remember that there may be stop-start.
Let’s consider the health, fitness and wellbeing aspect of this cycle as the Sun turns a spotlight on your mind, body and spirit. Everything about your body will be a lot more obvious now – which is why it’s classically a time for a medical check-up. The Sun reveals (within a few days of this cycle beginning) what you can be proud of, in terms of your health – and what is clearly in need of attention. It exposes what is central and important – what can’t be overlooked.
Three Weeks to Check
This three-week period is extremely useful, as it can give you much clearer insights on everything. You’ll get a better view of what’s actually functioning, or not functioning, now (and that includes your doctor, natch.) I would extend this to COVID-19 as Virgo is the significator of the pandemic in astrology. Check and check again – particularly with information which may be out of date, or just plain wrong.
You’ll be put in a position where it’s easier to clearly rate treatments, diets, gurus, opticians, ‘miracle’ cures, doctors, hospitals, clinics, nurses, surgeons, health insurance staff, and associated areas. Your health insurance itself is a classic example of the Sun and Mercury in Virgo and paying attention to the tiny details is wise.
The Sixth House is also associated with part-time and full-time work, and the chores you do at home (if you don’t have a job), together with any outside interests which you think of as your duty (volunteer work, for example.) It’s about the labour you provide, on a daily basis, which is for others rather than yourself.
If you have developed a routine which actually functions properly, and a work ethic which actually tallies with your wellbeing (as well as the lists or schedules in your diary) then this cycle will prove it to you. If you are hard-working and efficient, you may find others draw attention to that.
The Cat and Dog
In astrology, Virgo rules the relationship between your general health and the work you do, including housework or just walking the dog or looking after the cat (Virgo rules small animals – and that includes chickens). You can’t separate your labours from your wellbeing for the obvious reason that being ill puts you out of action, but being extremely energetic can make you a superior employee to others who can’t keep up.
Sometimes the only way to get out of work or study you dislike (or housework) is to become ill. We learn this as children. If your health is below par in September 2023 have a look – honestly – at what you do for a crust and how you might change that. If you unconsciously reject your job, or even consciously reject it but do nothing about it, nine times out of ten it is your body which speaks to you on this cycle.
So, although I wish you the very best of health, Aries, if there is anything untoward in September, tune into your true feelings about working.

Courtship, the Bedroom, Children or Young Adults
The most important transit of the year for all aspects of intimate sexual relationships or romance is upon you. This is quite different to actual marriage or partnership; this transit can be about a one-night stand. It can also bring unplanned pregnancy after the aforementioned one-night stand! The Sun, New Moon and Mercury are all cycling through the Fifth House of your solar chart, which is really about courtship rituals. Simple dating for example or trawling through the faces on internet dating sites. The Fifth House is also associated with the sexual side of marriage, and very much with pregnancy, infants, schoolchildren, teenagers or young adults. The offspring of the union.
Expect to retrace your steps from August. Mercury will repeat his position from last month, so what you had assumed was a done deal, may change. You may have decided on the baby’s name with your partner and that now alters. That is one example. If you have been dating someone you may find it’s stop-start. I would not wish that on anybody, but we have to be honest about the astrology and say that Mercury Retrograde is about people changing their minds.
In fact, the ‘re’ prefix words apply to intimacy, The Pursuit of Love (to quote Miss Mitford) and all suitors in September. So, there is reconsideration and may be rethinking, too.
Your Own or Others’ Children
The children may be your own or belong to other people. We include nieces and nephews but also godchildren on this cycle. Sometimes the children or young adults are en masse, because of your career, so you may be a teacher. There may be rescheduling of the school term because of another COVID-19 outbreak, for example, or you may find that the stepchildren you were expecting to move back in with you, change their minds.
Mercury Retrograde is not a bad thing. I always say, it happened when the Titanic launched, and J.P. Morgan, its rich owner, cancelled his ticket to his benefit. We do associate this with ‘message received; message reversed’ though. It is very much associated with internet issues, or telephone trickiness. For that reason, if something strikes you as odd where the world of pregnancy or children are concerned, double-check.
Just cycle through, Taurus. Go ahead with all these matters but allow for the fact that what you had assumed in August may need to put to one side. In any case the New Moon in Virgo on Friday, September 15th, 2023, suggests that weekend is a new beginning for you, with a partner or date – or with a child. This is a new road to take with this person, however you two figure out the map.

House, Family, Apartment, Household, Town, Country
The Fourth House of your chart, where we find the majority of cycles this month, rules your home (typically, your house or flat, but sometimes your temporary accommodation). It also rules your family (that means parents, siblings and relatives, as well as partners and any children.) Because ‘home’ often means flatmates to people, they will also be prominent in this cycle. And, of course, the place you think of as home can also mean the country you were born in, or the country you live in now. In relation to all of the above, The Sun now asks, “Are you proud of all this, or not?”
Mercury, your ruling planet, is going backwards in this chart zone. So, what you assumed in August is not the case in September. The story alters. This is neither good nor bad; it is just a fact of life. The Sun will highlight every detail of your real-estate, the condition of your property, the state of the family or household. Mercury will bring a rewrite of what you assumed was the story last month. This may be literal, so the paperwork goes back to the drawing board.
Cher and Ozzy Osbourne
Now you know why you always need Plan B and Plan C on Mercury Retrograde. It began on August 8th and does not stop until September 30th. So, hold that thought. Cancellations and rescheduling is extremely common, and this may involve the builder (say) or something far weightier, regarding your family circle.
Everything is terribly public now, too. Perhaps that’s why it’s so common to find guests staying in your home now – suddenly, the kitchen (or your relationship with your parents) is on full display.
Some real-life examples from my files are as follows:
- Sagittarian musician and TV star Ozzy Osbourne had this cycle on March 5th, 2002, when the reality show about his family, The Osbournes, premiered on American television.
- Taurean actress and singer Cher also had the Sun in the Fourth House when she decided to sell the contents of her home, in order to redecorate it. The mammoth spring clean was announced on August 1st, 2006.
Gemini, as you are ruled by Mercury, when he appears to go through a loop, so do you. This is why I publish the Mercury Retrograde dates the year before, so you can plan ahead. It’s wise to avoid buying or selling property on this cycle, or going full steam ahead with renovations, because Mercury rules information and transportation. When he goes backwards so does the paper trail – or there are issues with the mail – or messages don’t get through.
As I said, it’s neither good nor bad, but it does rather get in the way. As you have four more weeks to go make sure you have Plan B and Plan C if it involves the people at home; the actual property; your hometown; your homeland.
You can continue the journey and you can certainly make a new start on the New Moon on Friday, September 15th, 2023, Gemini. Just remember that the wheels will spin backwards on the track.

Siblings, Cousins, Short Journeys, the Internet
The Third House of your chart is ruled by Virgo, and it contains a number of different life areas to manage in September. Your brother, sister and/or cousin is a likely area of change or delay, as what was in motion in August now alters course. Mercury actually rules the Third House in astrology so when we see him retrograde (the cycle began on August 8th and runs until September 30th, 2023) you can assume cancellation or stop-start with the plans. This may have been as basic as your brother flying from America to visit you in England. It may be more complex, depending on your natal chart.
Short journeys rather than long-haul international flights are also the focus with this cycle in September. We include commuting in that. If you are one of those Cancerians who also has Virgo factors in her or his natal chart, there are likely to be ongoing questions about the car or the bus, the tram or the domestic flights. As this cycle does not end until the final loop on Saturday, September 30th, have a back-up plan now. There may be a strike or extreme weather for example.
You are ruled by the Moon, so the New Moon on Friday, September 15th, 2023, is an important new beginning, both with siblings and/or cousins, but also your commute or regional travel agenda. You’re still not quite there with a smooth plan, though, so just have a flexible idea that can be tailored to fit. I don’t need to tell you we are in the middle of yet another COVID-19 outbreak with a different variant and of course, that can scupper plans at a distance.
Elon Musk
Finally, Cancer, the Third House of your chart, ruled by Virgo, is very much about the internet, the media, publishing and all communication. This can go from core issues like hearing, speech and writing – to more general concerns like Twitter (X) and basic computing. It is a very brave woman or man who launches anything on Mercury Retrograde and of course your fellow Cancerian Elon Musk decided to rename Twitter on this transit. No wonder it’s not sticking.
The Sun as well as Mercury in your Third House of internet will plainly highlight what has to change. Once the cycle has finished at the end of the month (beware rookie astrologers who tell you it started on August 23rd and finishes on September 15th, 2023) everything will be where it should be! Having gone around in circles with a website (for example) you will end up somewhere that’s going to last.

Finance, Business, Charity, Property
Leo, sometimes you have to put your head down and concentrate on what flows. That happens to be money, your company or corporation, good causes, houses and apartments – in September. Even if you find the currents cross over each other (Mercury Retrograde) and you repeat yourself, this is still worth pursuing. A classic example would be paperwork issues; an accountant who uses the wrong email for you; a delay in insurance refund. Yet, there are some terrific aspects involving the Virgo traffic in September which make it worth your while to pursue this.
You have the Sun (your ruler) and Mercury in Virgo along with a New Moon. This suggests a new source of income for some Leo people; in other cases, an inheritance finally gets the green light. As I said, you have Mercury Retrograde with you and in fact he has been on a loop since August 8th, 2023, but everything pans out in the end. Having Plan B is not a bad idea, though.
Three Weeks to Watch
For about three weeks, your financial position, your salary, your money management, your assets (possessions or property) and your debts, will be in sharp focus. Your values will also be in the spotlight. That means what you will and won’t sell out for, and also who (or what) you consider to be priceless. Does your personal code of values pass inspection, for example? This may be about your inheritance, or a legacy you leave to others.
Along with the Virgo traffic, you still have Saturn and Neptune in Pisces in your solar Eighth House of joint finance. It is possible that September is about your marriage and mortgage, for example, or a will.
This time last year, you put certain things in motion where your finances, lifestyle, business interests, security, property or values were concerned. What happens now is your annual update. This may be an NFT investment, for example, or a business venture (even a modest one).
This cycle can only happen once a year, Leo, so it is about singling out the most important aspects of your financial, business and property world, as opposed to the forgettable trivia. If you wanted to start earning from Substack or Twitter (X) for example, then September may be the month. If you need to sort out your accounts, this is the month.
Your Value System
Do you have the kind of values which impress other people, no matter how rich or poor you are? For a week or two, you could bask in the limelight as your integrity and principles turn you into a philanthropist of note. Charity is ruled by Virgo in your chart, Leo, as much as revenue. I would also include the value of your house or apartment in this; September may be the month you realise it has increased enormously without you having to lift a finger.
If the financial, business or property picture falls short of your own, or other people’s, expectations, use this chance to make a plan for the next 12 months. You have until this time next year to get things right. You need to be confident about your cash situation and security now, so if you’re not, crunch the numbers (or your values) until they can pass inspection, a year from now.

Mercury and the Sun are in your sector of appearances and branding in September. Mercury is still going backwards and so will your plans. Make allowances by having a back-up, or even a second back-up. A classic example is printing business cards only to find the spelling is wrong. Mercury Retrograde isn’t bad, by any means. It is just associated with stop-start and delay. Sometimes cancellation.
Don’t Sit on Your Hands
Heaven forbid you should sit on your hands just because of this transit. However, it will be obvious to you that what you assumed was in place, regarding yourself, after August 8th was nothing of the sort. In fact, September brings a replay and rewind. You may revisit your plans for an autobiography, for example (if you are Virgo Prince Harry) or find that the portrait you were having painted, has to be put on hold for a few weeks. It’s on that level.
For most people, September is about Twitter (X) and other platforms like Substack as this is where we see your name and face. It is where you describe yourself. An awful lot of people who quit Twitter in high dudgeon will go back. As I said, Mercury Retrograde is neither negative nor positive, it just does what it says on the can. When it comes to your image, use the ‘re’ prefix as there will be rewrites and renegotiation.
This should never stop anybody from doing anything and in fact the New Moon in Virgo on September 15th is a new beginning for you. This is when you may book in for thermage or dermal filler, for example, or seek a new pair of glasses. If you have been losing your hair you may book in for plugs. Lots of Virgo people will already be on the relaunch trail and find that the August schedule or idea now alters. Life will be normal after September 30th.

Psychics, Psychology, Self-Help and Spirituality
September 2023 is about your inner self. You will be alone more, or need to be alone more, in order to deal with your soul. This may involve a self-help book; the church; Buddhism; hypnosis; your therapist. Libra, this process has been going on since August 8th when Mercury Retrograde began in Virgo, the sign which rules your mind, body and spirit in your natal chart – and in your solar chart – it rules your inner self.
So, there are really two cycles going on at once here and if you do have Virgo factors in your chart, September is the second of a two-part series about balancing your mind and consciousness. Your soul and spirit. No wonder you need to be left to your own devices to do this – unless of course you have a priest or counsellor, a rabbi or confidante.
The Invisible You
The Twelfth House is mysterious because so much of life here is invisible. Only those who are close to you will even realise what is going on. Nobody can see what you are feeling or see any evidence of what you need to talk about. Of course, it may be, you keep it to yourself. The Twelfth House is about God or your rejection of God. So, you can be a Roman Catholic here, or reject conventional religion and pursue the world of quantum mechanics. Everybody has to have a take on the universe on this transit and the universe within.
We associate the Samaritans with the Twelfth House as well as other telephone help services which are confidential. We also associate this transit with journals and diaries. It can coincide with a new interest in Jung or Freud. Dreams are a classic indicator of this cycle.
The New Moon will bring a new start with all this – a new pathway – on or close to Friday, September 15th, 2023. This may be when you ditch one hypnotist for another (say) or ring up your local vicar and request an appointment. The only caveat with this in September is the typical reversal and rewind of Mercury Retrograde. So, with all scheduling and paperwork in particular, assume you’ll need Plan B. It may be that your psychiatrist keeps on switching the appointment, for example, or that you book yourself a Buddhist retreat only to find they cancel. Read the fine print.

Friends and Groups
Scorpio, the groups may include the Democrats or the Freemasons. The friendships may be very old and go back to childhood, or burgeoning. September is the month you realise how much of August has to be changed. Mercury Retrograde will bring rescheduling or reappraisal. It is also the month that the Sun is also in this sector of your chart, so it is a terrific chance to stand back from the community and get the measure of it. Where are things at?
You won’t have the full and final details until the day Mercury finishes his loop, which is Saturday, September 30th. Yet, it looks like you will make a new start with an ally, social website or team (say) just before that, on the New Moon of Friday, September 15th.
Dress Rehearsals
It’s only sensible to allow for beta-testing and dress rehearsal with friends and groups, both, this month. In fact, you will find that first and second attempts help a far superior third attempt. Still – you will need Plan B and Plan C. Mercury is the messenger of the Gods. The Greeks knew him as Hermes. He has wings on his helmet and shoes and is usually seen in full flight, moving forward. Today we associate him with couriers but also airlines. When that goes backwards on this transit, it can affect your social life by six degrees of separation. Cancellation is pretty common.
I’m not seeing major long-term transits of anything in Virgo in your chart, so I don’t think what happens with friends and groups in September is earth-shattering. The only exception to this is – if you have Aquarius factors in your natal chart. If so, January 2024 begins a massive shift in your life with this circle of people and one or two closer faces, who are part of an overlapping social circle. The power and control will move around quite a bit then, so in a way, September does pay forward to the start of next year.

Career, Academic Career and Unpaid Work
You are more than your career, or your social status, or your ‘position’ in the world. Of course, you are. But – for around three weeks, now, you are going to be seen purely in terms of your business card, your achievements, your success, and your mission. Are you a full-time Mr or Mrs, with a partner whose money, power and/or children defines your own status? That role too, will be up for inspection now. The world is watching, Sagittarius.
The Sun transiting your solar Tenth House takes place at the same time that Pluto is transiting your natal Tenth House, using the Natural House System. In plain English, publicly you are up for inspection, and you are also inspecting your job; your field; your ambitions. Privately, though, there is a replay of questions about power and control, which goes all the way back to December 2022-March 2023. Reshuffles, promotions, demotions, arrivals, departures are all back in your life with their consequences.
If you have anything in Capricorn in your natal chart, then the key to managing the issues about others taking over, is your own willpower. Use self-control and you will have control. Yet – this cycle ends in January 2024 so it’s not forever.
Do you have any idea about what you’re specifically well-known for, in your particular industry or field? Do you know what you’re ‘famous’ for, in your academic world? That’s what the Sun will single out now. Its brilliant, relentless spotlight will sweep around your name, reputation, CV and success rating for around 21 days, showing you what’s what. If you take the Sun to be like an old-fashioned Hollywood spotlight and imagine yourself standing there with your Curriculum Vitae in your hand, that’s what September is like.
The same trends apply to you if you are retired, unemployed or have full-time home duties – but this cycle will be about the roles and goals you have on your own merits. Sagittarius, there will be a fresh start on the New Moon on Friday 15th September. A new path, a different compass with points West, East, North and South.
Spike Milligan and Rod Stewart
Wading through my files, I find two good examples of this transit:
- Aries comedian Spike Milligan was awarded a knighthood on the New Year’s Honours List during this cycle, on December 30, 2000. For good measure, he also had Mercury and the South Node in the Tenth House at the same time.
- Capricorn musician Rod Stewart also had the Sun in the Tenth House on the day he won a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, on 12th October 2005. Awards, big and small, are common during this cycle.
Sagittarius, the whole time Mercury Retrograde is with you, so although I gave you warnings about this last year, you may need a quick reminder that whatever you assumed was final after August 8th, never was. Right up until the last day of September, the communication will be stop-start or backwards. What was agreed or in writing may be reshaped or even come to nothing. Again, this is about your career, unpaid work or academic career. I’m glad you read that article last year, if you did, because this entire time, you will have had Plan B and Plan C. One of the very good reasons for this is either strike action or COVID-19 which continues to have an impact at six degrees for you.

Foreigners and Foreign Countries
Into the Ninth House of foreigners and foreign countries you go, in September, accompanied by Mercury Retrograde and the Sun, as well as a New Moon. This sector of your chart embraces academia, publishing and the worldwide web. This makes sense when you think about it. Foreign students and the international reach of YouTube, say.
What you can expect is a rewind and replay of what was in motion from August. So, there may be cancelled trips, for example, or the agenda from Europe to the US or Asia may have to alter. Mercury is communication. Backwards, or retrograde, he is the big rewrite. In fact, as this transit holds until the final day of the month, you’d want to ensure you have travel insurance covering COVID-19 (if you are even flying at all) and quite naturally, you’d want to get everything in writing regarding your university or college.
Web Glitches
The web is notorious for glitches on Mercury Retrograde so you would certainly want an alternative plan if you are pursuing important website goals now. Publishing as a whole, with its global reach, may also concern you – in which case the book or magazine, the journal or other publication, should be treated as a first take/second take situation.
The retrograde of Mercury began on August 8th and finishes on September 30th, which is a circuit that may stall or even cancel some plans, particularly involving other cultures, nationalities or languages. Mercury does in fact rule the written and spoken word, so in the Ninth House for a few more weeks, you’d want to be aware of the potential for Lost in Translation moments.

It’s All About the Money
If you are one of those people who reads every astrology column going, you’ll be seeing all of my colleagues talk to you about finance in September. There is a basic reason for this. You have transits in Virgo in your Eighth House of joint finance, business, charity and property. At the same time, you also have Neptune and Saturn, two slow-going planets, in your Second House of personal banking. So, you can’t really get away from it, Aquarius, you have to make some big decisions in September.
These are best made with a ‘Wait and see’ policy as Mercury Retrograde began on August 8th, 2023, and ends on September 30th, 2023 (and not before). That’s how long this circuit takes. In fact, if you read my warning dates about Mercury Retrograde last year, you will have known that ever since August 8th you will have likely seen:
- Payment delays
- Paperwork confusion
- Online banking muddles
- Slow insurance repayments
- Unclear insurance instructions
- Delayed business contracts
- Possible theft
I am sure you can add to that list! Mercury Retrograde is not ‘bad’ (which is teenage astrology) although it is at the time, extremely inconvenient. For every cancellation or delay, though, there can be a pay-off or ‘phew’ moment later. It really depends on your personal chart. Sometimes you dodge a business bullet because you are pulled out of a situation, owing to circumstances beyond your control.
Boringly, I have to tell you it can work the other way. People can and do lose money on this transit. Once again, it depends on your natal chart. If you have difficult aspects between Taurus and Scorpio, for example, or a difficult planet like Saturn in Taurus or Scorpio – you may feel this transit more.
To be on the safe side, assume there is a new start with your money on the New Moon on Friday 15th September. Correct. You can also assume that whatever was in motion since August 8th will either come to nothing; be held up; change shape substantially. Also, if you begin anything at all with the bank (say) or your accountant (for example) in September, allow for the fact that it will turn back on itself. It will not proceed in a linear way.

Duets and Duels
Pisces, you have most of your horoscope traffic in the Seventh House of duets and duels, in September 2023. This concerns your marriage (say) or perhaps a business partnership that ended in recrimination. It can be about your former wife, or a former girlfriend. This cycle can also be about a professional double-act, which is very much current.

Whatever your chart looks like, or even if you don’t know, you can bet September will bring a lot of stop-start with the other person. This man or woman has been at the heart of a delayed process of agreement since 8th August and it continues in September. Communication may have misfired. There may have been internet or telephone issues. Mercury rules messages so when he is backwards and stuck, so is the understanding, or the actual words. Letters can get lost, for example, or people can go back on their word.
You will make a new start with the other side, or your other half, on the New Moon on Friday, September 15th. This is par for the course. Just be aware that for another couple of weeks more, you could see the story change again between you, as this transit is notorious for rewrites and replays. You’d want to get everything in writing, Pisces, then read the fine print to see what happens if conditions alter – which they well may.
As I said, if you do have Libra natal factors, September is far more important. This may mean a reconciliation with your ex; a new relationship; an agreement over separation; an engagement. There are many variations on this theme but as you would be experiencing Seventh House transits not possible in some 18-19 years, I’d expect September to be pivotal.
Pisces, however, it goes with your duet or duel in September, remember to treat everything as a first draft or dress rehearsal until you get past the end of the month and expect the first week of October to clinch it.
